Women in Local Government

Bursary Program

A bursary program has been developed to assist women municipal staff in moving to more senior levels within municipal government. The objectives of the program are to encourage women municipal staff to further their knowledge and skills and to provide them with more career opportunities within the municipal sector.

Through this program, financial assistance is made available to deserving women to assist them in undertaking studies within the municipal sector including public administration, accounting, human resources, urban and rural planning, civil engineering, recreation and other recognized courses or programs of skill upgrading or professional development. The bursary may also be used to offset costs to join professional associations or to enroll in short courses, workshops, seminars, and conferences.

2008 was our inaugural year for the Bursary Program where seven women municipal staff was awarded bursaries totalling approximately $13,000.

To be eligible the applicant must be female, be a permanent employee of a Nova Scotia municipality and have been employed by a Nova Scotia municipality for a minimum of two years.

The Bursary Committee will award the second round of bursaries in October 2009. Visit
