Women in Local Government

Municipal Campaign Schools

In April-May of 2008, the WILG Project hosted four municipal campaign schools for women in Dartmouth, Yarmouth, Sydney and Stellarton. The purpose of these non-partisan campaign schools was to provide an educational and fun training session for women interested in running for municipal council for the first time.

The schools yielded excellent results. In total, there were 94 participants in the four schools. Of these, 38 or 40 per cent ran in the 2008 municipal elections. Of the 38 that ran, 13 or 34 per cent were elected.

The next municipal campaign schools will be held in the Spring of 2012 just prior to the October 20 municipal elections.
